Reopened in 2021 after almost forty years of closure, MUCIAN – the Civic Archaeological Museum of Noto – preserves an extraordinary collection that tells the story of the Noto area from the Palaeolithic age through to the Roman and Late Antique periods.
Alongside creating the museum’s visual identity, we developed an augmented reality app and an immersive virtual tour, making the collection more accessible and attractive for all kinds of visitors.
At the heart of the project is the multimedia augmented reality guide, available on tablets provided by the museum.
In addition to multilingual written and audio content, visitors can point the tablet at special markers inside the display cases and see 3D reconstructions of the main artifacts directly in the app, exploring every detail of the objects on show. These digital contents enrich the visit and also serve as a valuable digital archive to support conservation and research.
The immersive virtual tour, accessible via VR headset or computer, extends the museum’s reach globally and is especially useful for anyone wishing to discover the museum before visiting in person. The information it provides is a helpful resource for teachers and students when preparing educational visits.
Being able to explore the spaces remotely in advance is also particularly valuable for people with social or anxiety-related difficulties, helping them to familiarise themselves with the museum environment in a controlled way and reducing the stress often associated with visiting new places.
