Anzio’s history takes shape in 3D

Civic Archaeological Museum of Anzio

For the Civic Archaeological Museum of Anzio, Hi.Stories carried out a digital modelling and 3D printing project to reproduce some of the collection’s most significant artifacts. The aim was to provide visitors with tactile and display-ready replicas that make it easier to understand the history of ancient Antium, through faithful, easy-to-handle copies with strong educational impact.

The project focused on a selection of diverse objects, chosen to reflect different aspects of the museum’s collection. One of the most striking pieces is the reproduction of the celebrated “Maiden of Anzio”, found in Nero’s villa. The statue was recreated at a 1:1.17 scale and hand-finished to echo the shapes, proportions and sculptural qualities of the original marble. Alongside this, cinerary urns and wine amphorae were also reproduced.

Tactile workshops to explore and discover the Museum

All replicas were 3D printed in PLA and then carefully hand-processed and finished to achieve a material look and feel consistent with the originals. Choosing 3D printing made it possible to combine conservation, accessibility and storytelling: fragile objects that cannot be handled become practical tools for understanding the techniques, volumes and functions of ancient artifacts.

Given the museum’s strong focus on local schools and the wider community, the printed replicas are used to create touch-based educational activities and workshops designed for both students and residents.
